H.Upmann’ story begins in 1844, when Herman Upmann, a cigar-loving banker invested in a cigar factory that doubled as a bank and cigar business. Unfortunately, the company closed in 1922, but was revived by British company J. Frankau & Co. until 1935 and sold to Menendez y García Company that instilled the reputation of H. Upmann as it is known today. While the larger sizes, with a smooth subtle mouthfeel are most sought after cigars, the H. Upmann’s are normally a mild- to medium-bodied smoke –– a beginner’s favourite.
